the flames? >> anne makovec is in berkeley right now. what can you tell us? >> the good news is the fire is almost out and the people that were in the house did make it out all right. there were five people people living in the house. the street will be closed for some time. the fire broke out around midnight and did significant damage to the rear of the home. look at these pictures we found on the website for the daily cal when the fire was al full bore between midnight and 2 a.m. at one point the firefighters were inside, the second story was collapsing on them. they had to get out and fight it from the outside. i'm here with deputy fire chief. tell me about that moment when you started to realize that the structure's integrity was being compromised. >> so when the firefighters

were inside the outside incident commander was evaluating the structure and saw the heavy amount of flames that were shooting out of the building and that's when they realized that there was going to be a collapse of the second story of the roof structure. so we went defensive spreading the water from the top of our ladder pipe in from the outside into the windows. that's what we call a defensive fire. >> reporter: when you're looking for hot spots, there's a lot of voids you say that hot spots could be hiding. >> with the collapse of the structure, the second floor, it's creating void spots that we can't get to the fire. so there's small hidden hotspots that we're trying to get to. we'll be here all morning waiting for daylight to break so we can evaluate the structure and how far we can get in. >> reporter: all right, deputy chief gil dong, thank you for that. again, the investigation continuing. there was some talk that the firefighters might be looking at a propane tank as part of

the cause. but that's not being confirmed at this point. they are look at everything and the investigation will continue later on this morning. also want to give some props to the berkeley pd because they were able to help a woman in a wheelchair out of the home. no injuries for firefighters or residents. also, should mention that some of the surrounding homes were evacuated at one point. everybody has been allowed back in. live in berkeley, anne makovec, cbs 5. a wild night at oakland city hall. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in oakland where protestors had another showdown with the city council. >> reporter: michelle, yeah, they were locked out of the council chambers and city leaders say they did this for security reasons and now they have yet to decide how they will handle meetings moving forward. reporter: it was chaos outside council chambers. dozens of protestors were locked outside every city council.

the group was speaking out against of the shooting of alan bluford the oakland teen who was armed when police shot and killed him. the bluford family held back information about their son's death. the family addressed the council last night. >> he murdered alan bluford in cold blood and that you are covering up a racist murder. >> reporter: several of the family's supporters chanted inside but things got quiet after the council president gave the family the police report regarding their son's death. the family says it was heavily edited but according to the report, it proves that alan bluford never fired a shot despite initial reports. the district attorney's office is still investigating and the family says they plan to come back to meetings in the future. this group of protestors was the same group that shut down the city council meeting two weeks ago. live in oakland, cate caugiran,

cbs 5. >> thank you. oakland officials are blasted in a new report on officer-involved shootings. the court appointed monitor checking police says that police sometimes shoot at suspects even if there is no imminent threat. the monitor's report says police investigations into the shootings often fell short with detectives expecting that they were justified. he disappear today with weeks ago and family and friends are now searching for a san jose man. they held a vigil last night to pray for the safe return of 32- year-old eric dean garcia last seen september 18 leaving a friend's home two blocks from home. he got a phone call, said he would be right back and just left on his motorcycle. >> so when he wasn't home that next morning when we got up, we knew something was wrong. >> he was a loving guy. >> his family is worried because garcia doesn't have his heart medication with him. he is described as 5'10", 350 pounds with a harley-davidson

tattoo on the back of his head. the broads of both fishermen who -- the bodies of both fisherman who disappeared sunday have been found. they were located separately in pidgeon point on the san mateo county coastline. they were not wearing life jackets when their boat capsized sunday morning. gas prices are soaring again and the industry is blaming it on the heat wave. the exxon refinery in torrence one of the largest in the state lost power monday due to high temperatures. the heat combined with the chevron refinery fire in richmond in august is increasing prices at the pump, but some drivers aren't buying it. >> the gas companies find any reason they can. this is just another excuse, the heat. >> the wholesale cost shot up a dollar in one week. by friday retail prices could spike by 30 cents. you can track gas prices in your area on cbssf.com. i think i want to take bart on the bus or just walk.

shopping for groceries, pharmacy items and other merchandise. the grand opening is today at 7:30. well, it's the naked truth. some people are fed up with public nudity in san francisco. so there's a new proposal calling for fines against people who run amok without their clothing. street fairs and parades would be exceptions and the fines would start at $100 and are being considered by san francisco's board of supervisors. >> hm. 4:39. there are big events in san francisco all weekend and some people wonder if it's too much for the transit to handle. it includes the 49ers against the bills on sunday, giants and major league baseball play- offs, fleet week with the blue angels, yachting race, blue grass festival. it's crazy this weekend. san francisco is gridlocked even without big events of but the mayor is optimistic. >> they are investing in the infrastructure, which is the

celebrate. >> he went right through the plexiglass. >> that hurts. big changes today, of course, last couple of days we have seen triple digits around the bay area but today those numbers going to start to cool down, a sea breeze kicking in. the tricky part determining when that's going to happen. right now mild start to the day, hazy at the coast, clear in the valleys. temperatures in the 60s around the bay. by the afternoon, we'll notice some cooler temperatures. it will be most difficult forecast right toward the coastline. just when that patchy fog may make a return, may see that this afternoon. 60s and 70s expected there. sunshine inside the bay a lot of 70s, a few 80s in the san jose area, still hot in the valleys with 90s. that ridge of high pressure bringing the heat is going to weaken and drop to the south a bit and then the sea breeze this low is going to move in toward the coastline. sea breeze will drop the temperatures. southerly surge of low clouds and fog this is what we see after a nice heat wave here in

the bay area moving onshore later on today and overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. so some big changes in the weather coming over the next few days. those temperatures really going to be coming down across the board. today, though, still on the warm side into san jose. it is 58 degrees there. about 84 in milpitas. maybe 72 if we're lucky in pacifica before we cool down. you may hit that high in the morning and cool off by the afternoon. 90s showing up in the valleys inland and inside the bay that sea breeze will be blowing, still not bad. about 71 in sausalito, 79 oakland, 88 in santa rose. next couple of days the temperatures are starting to drop off. more clouds on the way, low clouds and fog to begin with but over the weekend, that low is going to drop in toward the bay area. partly cloudy skies, even a slight chance of a couple of raindrops to begin next week. can you believe that, elizabeth? >> where'd the summer go? >> that was it. >> lasted two days. all right. thanks, lawrence. let's take you outside. let's show you a live look right now at the bay bridge. everything looks good heading into san francisco. i want to give a heads up. it's walk to schoolday so you

may find more kids out and about walking to school. it is a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the needs of walkable communities. again it's a little early to be seeing any kids out heading to school this morning. but just a heads up for later on in the morning commute. bay bridge traffic looks good. down the eastshore freeway we have had a couple of different problems. we'll get to that in just a minute. in the meantime here's a live look at the golden gate bridge where they should be doing some lane changes any minute but so far, so good coming from marin county on 101 heading towards the waldo grade. so the eastern freeway we have seen a couple of different problems. accident at powell is all right cleared. carver approaching gilman in berkeley, in the center divide. it's early, maybe not causing much of a delay. this is a live look through berkeley closer towards ashby avenue. elsewhere through the macarthur maze, looking good. once again, we have a lot going on in san francisco this weekend and even starts this week so we have oracle open

world happening south of market. so howard street is shut down once again between 3rd and 4th. and then we have the america's cup over by scott and marina green. they have tents set up already so we're already seeing delays along the embarcadero and marina boulevard. and once again, lots going on this weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up. in the meantime, i'll toss it back to the new desk. deadly violence in syria with a series of suicide bombings in aleppo. a government official says at least 31 people have been killed and scores of others wounded. the explosives went off in a main square. aleppo has seen intensified fighting lately between president assad's regime and the rebels trying to oust him. two republican lawmakers claim state department officials in libya had requested tighter security before the deadly attacks on the consulate in benghazi. california congressman darrell issa and jason chavez of utah say they got their information directly from sources with

knowledge of the events in libya. secretary of state hillary clinton is forming a committee to investigate the attacks. federal investigators now believe several gunmen took part in the attack that killed a u.s. border patrol agent in arizona near the mexican border. 30-year-old nicholas ivie was killed in yesterday's shooting and a second agent was injured. the surviving agent is said to be in stable condition. there are no suspects so far. american airlines says it has identified and solved the problem involving those seats that popped loose on two of its planes. an inspection turned up four other planes that had similar problems. american blames improperly installed clamps. >> they have determined what they believe is a potential failure -- but beyond the failure, we're focusing our attention on making sure that they're properly installed. >> the airline says it has inspected and fixed the seats on three dozen of its boeing 757 jets and plans to check 11 other planes. wall street will be

watching what hewlett-packard's boss has to say today in san francisco. meg whitman will give her annual presentation to investors. hp is coming off its worst quarter ever and stock has fallen to a ten-year low. she told the "new york times" last week that she will have to explain strategies for the company and how it will grow. samsung is free to sell its galaxy 10.1 tablet computer in the united states. it did not illegally use technology developed by apple. the jury found many of samsung's other products did infringe on apple patents. major apple investor tells "fortune" magazine that he heard from multiple sources that a smaller version of the ipad will soon be released. the investor says invitations to the unveiling of the near 8" screen tablet go out on october 120th. if that's the case, fortune reports the smaller ipad could

be in stores in time for christmas shopping. heard about tanning beds and skin cancer, and now researchers say the earlier people use them, the greater the risk. researchers at ucsf looked at studies going back to 1977. they found people younger than 25 who use tanning salons had a significantly higher risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer than those who tanned outside. as cold season gets under way, experts say don't turn to vitamin d for relief. new zealand scientists say it doesn't help fight colds. they followed 322 adults for more than a year and found no difference between the group that took vitamin d and those who didn't. and a trend that's moving in the right direction. new numbers show nine out of ten high school teens did not drink and drive last year. the centers for disease control says there's been a 54% decrease in teen drinking and driving since 1991.
